Seaworthy is the long awaited second offering from independent filmmaker Nathan Oldfield, the maker of the highly regarded and award winning underground surf film Lines from a Poem.

Nearly three years in the making, Seaworthy documents a variety of individuals and the different ways that they approach wave riding.

The film presents a left of center look at the diversity in surfing, including the riding of alaias, olos, singlefins, twins, thrusters, quads, fish, logs, toothpicks, surfmats, and body surfing.

It's a unique, intimate and timeless perspective of surfing, surfers and the environment in which they live and find their being.

Julian Wilson Scratching The Surface

Directed by Matt Beauchesne at Irons Brothers Productions, "Scratching the Surface" documents the adventures of Julian, along with friends and fellow professionals Dane Reynolds, Taj Burrow, Dusty Payne, Mick Fanning and others as they spend a year hitting some of the world's most beautiful surf spots. New Emissions of Light and Sound

New Emissions of Light and Sound is a DVD collaboration between the sometimes-introverted world-renowned DJ Sasha and a bunch of Surfers that managed to snag themselves a nod for both Best Core Film and Best Editing from the 2007 X-Dance Film Festival; Movie of the Year, and a win for Best Cinematography from the 2006 Surfer Poll Awards for their previous film, Secret Machine.

DJ Sasha is best known for his expansive sets, blurring the lines between trance, breaks, progressive, and deep house, creating a fluidic groove that is unmatched; a creation uniquely his own.

Taj Burrows, CJ Hobgood, Damien Hobgood, Nathan Webster, and Yadin Nicol go all "richter," and serve as the subject for this visually stunning 'surf-u-mentary,', which is silent save the original soundtrack provided by DJ Sasha.

Some of the shots achieved by the film crew will make you wonder how they were achieved. The label on the box states, 'For Best Results, Watch Between Midnight and 5am.' Sound advice. You may not enjoy much about this production otherwise.

For starters, it's way too short. Even with the credit roll, it's maybe 35 minutes long. There is absolutely no plot, no narrator, and no story. So, while it may be visually appealing, it's pretty boring.

Unless your nuts about surfing, or DJ Sasha, I wouldn't bother with New Emissions of Light and Sound. The sound track by DJ Sasha is, of course, the highlight of the presentation. But again, with a 35 minute runtime, you'll spend most of it waiting for something to happen, then the credits roll, and you'll ask yourself the same thing I did: "What the heck was that?"

Cool. But not quite. I've got much better things to do with an hour. On a side note, this is not 'dance music' per se, rather, it is DJ Sasha at his best, and I look forward to more exciting things from Sasha and emFire Music.

Between the Lines explores the choice that most draft age surfers faced during the Vietnam War era: either go to war or evade the draft. It was one or the other. Between the Lines delves into the lives of two surfers who choose opposite paths. Pat Farley and Brant Page.

While following the lives of these two surfers the film chronicles the impact of the Vietnam War on the surfing lifestyle. From the peaceful shores of Hawaii to the canopy jungles of Vietnam, Between the Lines excavates the surfing cultures response to an extraordinary circumstance.

180° South

180° SOUTH is the story of one of the most unique and prolific environmentalists of our time -Yvon Chouinard. Rather than re-living Yvon's story through old photos and his life's work with pie charts, 180° SOUTH weaves Chouinard's tale through a modern day expedition. This expedition was inspired by the rumor of a legendary trip in 1968 and the proof that came with it when the lost cans of film that documented the trip were recently discovered. The old footage captures Chouinard and best friend Doug Tompkins in 1968 as they explore untouched mountain ranges and un-surfed coastline on a 5000 mile expedition from California to deep Patagonia. For the two men, the original '68 adventure still stands as "the trip of our lives." A young American adventurer named Jeff Johnson happened upon the footage in 1999 and spent the next ten years of his life dreaming of following their footsteps south. In 2007, Jeff dropped everything to finally fulfill his dream. He set out to follow Chouinard's classic route on what became a six month traverse of North and South America. His hope is simply to find unclimbed mountains and un-ridden waves in the spirit of his heroes. However, as he travels, his eyes open up to the see environmental disasters that threaten these places as well as the human triumphs that are working to save them. From the start of the film, each scene seamlessly echoes back and forth between Jeff's modern day adventure and conversations happening in a century old stone cabin in deep Patagonia. The two men (Chouinard and Tompkins) cook the fish they have just caught on a wood-burning stove. Their hair is silver now and the lines on their faces speak volumes. They have been best friends and expedition partners for over fifty years. They recount their lives with simple and humble narratives (all of which have achieved folkloric stature in the outdoor world). The stories come to life with classic archival footage and hand drawn animation (by artist Geoff McFetridge). Each story flows in-and-out of Jeff's voyage becoming a parable to a thesis that has solidified them as true visionaries in the most important revolution of our time: the preservation of the natural world. As the film progresses and Jeff picks up several more characters, each with their own unique views of the world, we realize that Jeff has been with the old men in the cabin the whole time. Asking the questions that have produced the stories and philosophies we see. We also come to find out that we are on the eve of what could be the last big climb of their lives together (as they are both almost 70 now). It is an unclimbed, unnamed peak that is part of a two-million acre preserve. A park that the two have created together

The Union Express

The Union Express is the first installment in a three-part documentary series by award winning director Josh Landan. The first film will star pro surfer/songwriter Timmy Curran as a tour guide down the West Coast, featuring stops in San Francisco, Huntington Beach, San Diego, and other major surf spots along the Amtrak line. Lost Prophets 2010

urfing culture originated as an act of escape and joy, these personal explorations were a way of connecting with nature. In our present day there has been a departure from these origins entering this new age of hyper-progression and extreme commercialism. Amongst the unstoppable trend of surf globalization there are certain individuals who have chosen this age-old path of discovery with surfing being a spiritual reflection of themselves. It is these individuals immersed in the surfing experience living this rebirth of the grassroots spirit that will help guide our sport in a new revitalizing direction. Lost Prophets will usher in a new prologue of our history, a prophecy of our sports future.

Lost Prophets-search for the collective is an adventure documentary that follows nine surfers in different aspects of life; from a renegade canyon dweller to devout West Javanese Muslim the film delves into different aspects of surfing; all the while centered around the Indonesia surf escape.
Some people live life asleep, only dreaming their awake. Amongst the unstoppable trend of surf globalization there are certain individuals who have found a way of waking up. Lost Prophets the film portrays a vivid picture of lives intertwined by adventure, balance, dedication and connection; bridging generations. Travel the world with the lost prophets as their stories unfold during some of the best Indian Ocean waves documented in the past decade.
FILM QUALITY
The high point of the film. Sharp, smooth and some very well captured cinematography. Apffel has a very good eye in the world of cinema and I hope to see more. With a few new angles and techniques I hadn't seen used before

EDITING
Felt a little cliche with all the slow-mo elements. Aside from that the editing was good and Apffel has been able to edit different scenes with their own unique feel.

SURFING
The surfing throughout is pretty good but I wasn't blown away by any stretch of the imagination. The surfers all have their own unique style, but I didn't feel we saw enough of the guys on their 'chosen' crafts.

VARIETY
Although there are a number of different locations filmed, it all felt a bit too similar. Aside from the small sections where guys were riding alternative crafts, the majority of the film was shot in slow-mo barrel-ville.

SOUNDTRACK
Great tunes, and for the most part suited the film. Apffel pointed out that the tracks and lyrics of the songs are designed to tell the story. This is a hard concept to grasp without knowing and hard to focus on lyrics while watching the surfing. A good concept, but one that might require a little more experimentation.

CONCLUSION
Lost Prophets is a feel good movie, you know the ones... everything is shot in slow-mo to bring out the raw emotion and give you time work out what that warm fuzzy feeling is within. Nathan Apffel has put together a 'great' surf film but has missed the mark on releasing a breakthrough film. His eye for filming however is amazing and that alone is worth checking the film out. It's definitely a film worth checking out.

Surfing Favela

Surfing Favela" was shot with the aid of the communities of Cantagalo and Rocinha; the latter, with its 250,00 inhabitants, is considered the biggest slum in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The documentary richly portrays the daily tasks of a group of surfers that helps the youth of their own community to discover in surfing, a direct bridge to freedom and nature. The characters spend their days between the hills and the sea, trying to turn their projects into a sustained reality. But with so many difficulties and opposing forces, their small actions become nothing but truly enormous feats. Their testimony is a new generation of young surfers who defy their environments limitations by choosing the surfing lifestyle over the never-ending cycle of local violence, corruption and drugs.

"Surfing Favela" was selected as a finalist for the THE FUEL EXPERIMENT, an international contest sponsored by Fuel TV(USA) - the only Latin American Project to reach the Top Ten. The contest grants young talents of the Extreme Sports Audiovisual Industry with the complete funds to make their films a reality.

Lost Jewel of the Atlantic

Weaving thrilling big-wave surfing footage with testimony from some of surfing's greatest personalities, Lost Jewel of the Atlantic chronicles one of the world's most significant surf discoveries in decades, and the subsequent battle to prevent its destruction from ill-conceived coastal development.

Discovered in the late 1970's by French surfer Gibus de Soultrait, the point break in Jardim do Mar remained a relative secret to all but a lucky few traveling surfers, who challenged the island's big surf until the late '90's without revealing its location to the surfing world. But the secrecy that surrounded it led to its ultimate demise, when the government of Madeira proposed building a massive seawall in this small seaside village.

Surfers are not usually seen as being environmental revolutionaries, but in the case of Jardim do Mar, Madeira, they became true conservationists in order to preserve their surfing heritage. Lost Jewel of the Atlantic is a film about the battle that was waged in this small seaside village, where young surfers attempted to stand up for their rights against a government driven by greed. Local surfers in Madeira, with help from Save the Waves Coalition, mounted a serious fight in an attempt to save one of Europe's best surf spots. They fought against government misinformation, general ignorance about their sport, and a hostile local population to make their point heard. The film chronicles the discovery of surf on the island, the fight to save it, and emphasizes the point that surf spots are a valuable coastal resource that should never be destroyed.
